Protect Yourself From Fraud When Endorsing a Check

Posted on by

To guard against check fraud, you no longer need to write your account number on the back of a check when you endorse it for deposit or cash it at EECU.  To endorse a check, sign your name on the back of the check on the line that says, “Endorse Check Here.” (Sign your name as it appears on the front of the check on the “Pay to the order of” line.) Be careful not to write below the line that says, “Do Not Write, Stamp, Or Sign Below This Line.”

Important: Do not sign your name on the back of the check until you are about to cash or deposit it, otherwise someone else could try to cash the check if it becomes lost or stolen. If you are depositing a check instead of cashing it, a safer method of endorsement should include a phrase such as “For Deposit Only,” followed by your signature. In this manner, the check may only be deposited and not cashed.

For mobile check deposits, please remember to write “For Mobile Deposit Only” above your signature in the endorsement area on the back of the check or the deposit could be delayed or rejected.  Although some checks have a preprinted box to indicate mobile deposit, checking this box does not complete the endorsement requirement. “For Mobile Deposit Only” must be written legibly above your signature.
